I Love the Half!

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

It's Half Marathon time! I have decided it's time to train for another half marathon. I have completed a half marathon in the past, and absolutely loved it! 13.2 miles is just long enough for a challenge, but not so long you want to cut your legs off! I have always wanted to do a full marathon (and one day I will). However, my previous two attempts at training for a full marathon, while maintaining my normal aerobics teaching schedule, resulted in broken bones. The first time, I was training for the White Rock Marathon and got a stress fracture in my right ankle. The second time, I was training for the San Antonio Rock N Roll marathon and I got a stress fracture in my sacrum (which is essentially my lower back). Talk about ANNOYING! I think my body was trying to tell me something..... (like Lauren what are you thinking?? You have flat feet and one of your legs is longer than the other...Stop Running!)

With that being said, Eric is not too keen on the idea of me training for another full marathon. I decided to listen to his wise words (and my body) and train for a half instead! I chose the White Rock Half Marathon for 3 reasons:

1) It is in Dallas, so it's super convenient.
2) The race is held at White Rock lake, which is beautiful!
3) The race raises money for the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. TSRHC treats Texas children with orthopedic conditions, such as scoliosis, clubfoot, hand disorders, hip disorders and limb length differences, as well as certain related neurological disorders and learning disorders, such as dyslexia. What a great cause!

Let's check out the course!

Of course, in Texas horses and cowboys are a requirement for the start of a race!

Did you know the White Rock Marathon was voted the best marathon for first timers?

White Rock Lake is absolutely beautiful!

I am going to follow Hal Higdon's Intermediate Half Marathon Training Plan. I like Hal's training programs because they are simple and easy to follow. The program takes place over 12 weeks, so my official first day of training will be September 12th. Until then, I plan on running 3-4 times a week to build up my base endurance. I am really going to focus on increasing my speed this time around. I finished my last half marathon in 2 hours and 11 minutes. I am determined to beat my last time!!

Food for thought:
Have you ever ran a full or half marathon? If so, how did it go?
Do you have any great training tips to share?

Yours truly,

  2. yay, that's so exciting! i'm so jealous though, i was supposed to run my first half next month, but i had to take the last 6 weeks off because of my quad. (long story.) i'm back to running, but i won't be ready for 21kms in a few weeks. oh well, there will be others :)

that Hal Higdon program is quite popular, have you done it before? my only training tip...hmm...i've read that shorter strides are more efficient and better for your muscles/joints. hope that helps :)

  3. I'm going to do the San Antonio Rock n Roll full marathon this November and I've been doing this program: http://marathontraining.com/marathon/m_sch_2.html

I did schedule I first and have been building up all summer. I just did my first half in Minnesota last week and I finished in 2:01!

I'm thinking about doing the White Rock half because I know some other Group Ex girls are doing it and a friend form high school. My only concern is that it's not very long after I'll be running the full and I don't wanna get hurt!

    Keep posting on your progress!

  4. Hey Veronica how are you?? Wow Minnesota that sounds like a blast! I have done the San Antonio Rock N Roll before and it is great. There is a ton of live entertainment and the route is fantastic! I'll definitely keep you posted, and I hope you'll do the same!
