Happy Monday Everyone!!

How was your weekend??? Hopefully lovely!

Mr. George and I had a big weekend. On Saturday, I had to work in the morning and half the afternoon, but then it was off to the Warrior Dash!

We did the race with a big group of Eric's work friends. This was my first time to participate in a Warrior Dash race. I was super excited and ready to go! I knew there would be obstacles, but I had no idea they would be so dang scary. We waded through waist deep water, crawled over cars, ran through tires, scaled 14+ foot walls, army crawled underneath REAL barbedwire, and jumped over fire! It was intense! Here's E and I pre-race. Look how clean we are!

Since we didn't want to ruin our camera, we don't have any post-race pictures yet. We are planning on ordering some of the professional ones they took at the finish line. I can't even begin to describe how dirty we were!! It was fun, but I have to say I prefer races where I stay clean. :)

On Saturday night, two of my girlfriends came into town, and we celebrated by going to our favorite restaurant, The Hacienda on Henderson. It was so fun to catch up and talk all about fitness stuff! I miss talking about step choreography and proper squat form. I know, I'm a dork. On Sunday morning, we all woke up and took a hot yoga class at Sunstone Yoga. It was a vinyasa flow class, and I really enjoyed it.

Sunday afternoon was even more exciting. Eric and I started house hunting this weekend and saw quite a few houses we liked on Friday, but nothing really jumped out at us. On Saturday, our realtor called us and said he had a house we had to see. We met up with him Sunday afternoon to view the house. It was amazing, and I am officially in love! I am a big believer in not jinxing things, so I don't want to share too many details until we actually get the house. I'm afraid to get my hopes up too much. I promise I will keep ya'll up to date on the latest house details as they come in. ;)

I'm off to attempt to make a lemon meringue pie for one of the guys at work. I've never made one before, so wish me luck. I hope you have a Marvelous Monday!

Try This Thursday #17

Thursday, April 14, 2011

Howdy!!

How are you today? I can't believe it is already Thursday!

Whenever I stroll down the protein/ganola bar aisle at the grocery store, I always scope out the bars that are on sale. This week the Luna protein bars were on sale for $1. I think it's a little crazy that I considered that a really good deal, but what can you do? I picked up two chocolate peanut butter bars and one cookie dough bar. They were both delicious!!

source
Both bars have less than 200 calories and 12 grams of protein; however, they are a little higher in the sugar department than I would like (around 12 grams). They are also packed with vitamins and minerals that are important for women like folic acid, calcium and iron. I give them 2 thumbs way up!

My favorite move right now is a single leg squat with a corckscrew curl (I call it a rotation curl in my classes). It works your biceps, core, glutes, quadriceps, and hamstrings. Trust me, I am still feeling these from Monday as I type! Yowzers!!

Thank you Shape.com for this beauty. Here's how to execute this total body toner: Hold a dumbbell in each hand at sides, palms facing behind you, and stand with weight on left foot, right foot raised. Squat on left leg as you extend arms down. Rise up as you curl weights toward your shoulders, palms facing up. Return to the starting position and repeat for 30 seconds. Switch legs and repeat.

You could also switch things up by changing the bicep curl to an overhead press or up-right row.

I hope you all have a great Thursday!!

That's a wrap - healthy eating on the go!

Wednesday, April 13, 2011

Howdy Everyone!

How are you this morning? Did you have a nice Tuesday? Mine was fairly busy but good. Yesterday, I talked about how I often have to take a lot of my meals with me on the go. I could not live without my trusty pink lunch box! I thought today I would talk about some of my favorite on the go meals and snacks.

When it comes to breakfast, I have mastered the art of making oatmeal on the go. I either create my own instant oatmeal package and make my breakfast at work, or make my oatmeal before I leave home and let it cook in my Aggie coffee mug.

When packing my lunch, I often turn to wraps because they are super easy and you can pretty much wrap anything in a tortilla and it will taste great! I almost always pack a container of Greek yogurt for an extra punch of protein at lunch. The microwave in our office is not the best, so I usually try and pack foods that don't require reheating. This kind of limits my meat selection. My two most recent wrap creations looked like this:

Turkey wrap- Greek hummus, turkey breast, and spinach

Veggie wrap- Greek hummus, mushrooms, soy beans, avocado, fat free feta, and spinach
You can also never go wrong with a peanut butter and banana wrap! I love Mission carb balance tortillas for my wraps. They are nutritious and delicious!

I am always looking for new wrap ideas, so if you have any send them my way! Since I am somewhat of a snack aholic, I pack at least 2 snacks a day to take with me. Some days, I feel like my gym bag looks more like a grocery bag. :) I try to make sure my snacks, and meals for that matter, have a good balance of carbs and protein.

Some of my favorite on the go snacks are:
  • a banana and peanut butter
  • a protein shake made with protein powder, fruit, almond milk and non-fat plain yogurt
  • Greek yogurt with truvia and granola
  • homemade chia power balls
  • Luna protein bars
  • an apple and peanut butter
  • a boiled egg and a few berries
It's time to go pack my lunch and afternoon snack for the day. I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday!

Q's and A's:
Do you usually pack your lunch or go out to eat?
What is your favorite packable lunch?
What is your favorite snack to carry with you?
