Happy Healthy Holidays Challenge Week 6

Monday, December 29, 2014

Howdy!

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas! Our's was absolutely fabulous and full of friends and family. I will have a full recap once we get back to Austin. We arrived in Houston for The Texas Bowl on the 26th and have had a blast so far! There have been fun family activities every day such as a Zoo Lights tour and bowling. Belle is loving all the people watching!

I wanted to pop in and do a quick update for the last week of our Happy Healthy Holidays Challenge. Even though we've been away from Austin and my normal workouts, I have managed to sneak in a workout every day with the exception of Christmas day. I've gone on a few great runs and hit the hotel gym a few times as well. I'm trying to cross the finish line of 2014 strong!

Our first workout this week was featured on a workout Wednesday post a few weeks ago, and I enjoyed it so much, I thought I would bring it back. This workout left me sore sore sore, so get ready! :)

This next workout combines TRX strength work and 1/2 mile running intervals for a little bit of cardio. It's a great way to fit in your cardio and strength work in one workout. I also feel like the combination of running/biking and strength training always makes my workout fly by!

Last but not least, I have a tabata workout for you guys! This workout combines two of my favorite pieces of equipment, the TRX and kettlebell, and a combination of straight strength workout and tabatas. This one is a dozy for sure!

I hope you enjoy these workouts. There are only 3 more days officially left in the challenge, so let's finish strong!

How have your workouts held up during the holidays?

How do you find time to exercise during all of the craziness?

Workout Wednesday Christmas Eve Edition!

Happy Workout Wednesday and Christmas Eve!

We are headed to College Station today to spend Christmas Eve with our families! I am just beyond excited to celebrate Annabelle's first Christmas! This timeof year is even more magical with a new little angel to share it with.

I am a little crazy busy with packing, baking Christmas goodies, and getting Belle ready, but I wanted to pop in with a quick Workout Wednesday post. I actually posted this workout 3 years ago when I was headed home for Christmas. The cute little park by E's parent's house inspired this workout. This is actually the same park where we first told each other we liked each other way back in the day (I was 16 and he was 17), and it's where we took our Christmas pictures this year with Belle. So to say it has some happy memories, would be an understatement. The weather has been so nice here lately, I thought it would be fun to re-post this outdoor workout for Christmas!

20 walking lunges on each leg

20 pushups from toes or knees

20 bicycle crunches on each side

20 triceps dips off bench

**repeat all 3 exercises**

½ mile (or 5 minute jog around the park)

20 Side lunges on each leg

source

Plank walks (start from a plank position and move right hand and right leg out to the side then bring left hand to meet it, continue for 10. Then switch sides and move left hand and left leg out to the side then bring right hand to meet them, repeat 10 times.

45 seconds of flutter kicks

**repeat all 3 exercises**

Finish up with ½ mile jog around the park and some light stretching!

If it's a little to chilly where you live to get outside, give this Christmas inspired workout a try! You don't need any equipment and just enough space to do a burpee. Enjoy!

Happy Healthy Holidays Challenge - Week 5 Workouts

Tuesday, December 23, 2014

Happy Monday Friends!

I can't believe we are already on week 5 of the Happy Healthy Holidays Challenge. If you are new to the challenge, or just want to check out the other workouts we've done so far, check out week 1week 2week 3, & week 4!!

How are things going for you so far? I have completed 5+ workouts every week, but have admittedly fallen short of my 10,000 steps a day a few times. If only I could carry over my extra steps from days I went on long runs! :) I have some fun and festive workouts planned for us this week! I know many of us will be traveling for the holidays, so I tried to keep the equipment to a minimum.

Our first workout is perfect for traveling, because it only requires one piece of resistance tubing. If I am ever traveling somewhere I know I won't have access to any workout equipment, I love to pack a piece of resistance tubing in my bag. It takes up hardly any space, and can give you a great workout!

Our next workout will be handy if you are staying in a hotel over the holidays. Many hotel gyms leave something to be desired, but they usually at least have dumbbells. Fortunately, that is all you will need for this total body burner. I tested this one out on Saturday, and it was a doozy! My arms were shaking in the shower afterwards, which is always a sign of a good workout.
And last but not least, we must have a Christmas themed workout! I just couldn't resist!! You perform this workout just like the "12 Days of Christmas" song. You begin with the first exercise and add one exercise every round. So you start with a 1 minute wall sit, then do another 1 minute wall sit and add the second exercise. For round 3 you would do a 1 minute wall sit, 2 squat jumps, and 3 push-ups. Then for round 4 you would add the reverse lunges. Continue all the way until you get to your last exercise. Sounds fun right? It will definitely be a great workout that's for sure!!

We are heading to College Station on Christmas Eve and will be spending Christmas Eve and Christmas day with our families before heading down to Houston for the Texas Bowl. I am excited to try all three of these workouts while we are traveling!

What are your holiday plans?

How do you fit in exercise while traveling?

Think On This Thursday - A roundup of my favorite articles from the week

Thursday, December 18, 2014

Howdy,

I have been blogging for about four and a half years now, and one of the things I love most about the healthy living blog world is how much I have learned from other bloggers! Almost every day, I stumble upon an interesting article, delicious recipe, or fun workout I want to try. Today, I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite posts/articles from the week!

First up, is an article by Deanna, at Fit To Be Pregnant, I think all breastfeeding moms should read this article about how breastfeeding affects fat loss. I will totally admit, that after having Belle losing the baby weight was definitely something I thought about OFTEN and even caused me quite a bit of stress (just being honest here). Taking care of Belle is my #1 priority, but I do feel like there is so much pressure to "bounce" back right away after a baby. Heck, didn't some Victoria Secret model walk the run way the day after she gave birth or something? For the most part, the weight came off fairly easily with healthy eating, exercise, and the fact that I was not longer caring around an 8lb baby and extra water weight. However, those pesky last few pounds are giving me a run for my money. This article explains how breastfeeding does indeed burn extra calories which may help you loose weight. However, the hormones that go along with breastfeeding can make your body hold on to extra fat as well to protect your milk supply. Deanna does a great job of breaking it down in a very easy to understand way!

If you don't read the blog Purely Twins, you totally should! These girls are fabulous and come up with amazing recipes and workouts. Last week, they posted a Peppermint Fudge Brownie recipe that looks too delicious to be true. They are gluten-free, egg-free, dairy-free, and grain-free. Pretty much the perfect thing to take to a party because you have all the major food allergies covered!

Another delicious looking recipe I came across yesterday was by Mrs. Lindsay, at Cotter Crunch, These Grain Free Orange Maple Sugar Cookies sound delicious. The name just makes you hungry doesn't it? I have tried a few of Lindsay's recipes, and they have always turned out amazing. I can't wait to give this one a try!

I don't know about you, but I am definitely guilty of being attached to my smart phone. Having your work email on your phone is a blessing and a curse all at the same time. Being a work from home mama, it is extremely convenient to be able to answer emails, look up things on our MindBody app, or post to social media from my phone. Additionally, as a blogger and overall fan of social media, it is all too easy to reach for my phone during a commercial break, post to instagram while strolling with Belle, or send out a tweet while riding in the car with E. For the most part, I love my cell phone, but I know that it definitely acts as a distraction and keeps me from living in the present moment a lot of the time. This article by the Huffington Post discusses how excessive cell phone use is actually sucking the fun right out of our leisure time. It's definitely a great read if you are a cell phone junkie! I think one of my New Years resolutions is going to be to have more "unplugged" time each day.

Research shows the more you use your phone, the less fun you'll have.

Next, up is a blog series compliments of my fabulous friend Alison, over at Fearlessly Fierce. She is doing a special Christmas themed Elf On A BOSU series where she demonstrates a fun new exercise on the BOSU every day. I am a huge fan of the BOSU, so I am loving checking out her fun new ideas! If you post a picture of yourself to social media doing the moves, you will be entered to win a BOSU Fitness Ball!

Elf On A BOSU!

Some other great posts I've read this week include:

Holiday Sopping On A Budget via Annette, at Enjoy Your Healthy Life

14 Most Inspiring Weight Loss Stories Of 2014 via The Huffington Post

I'm sure there are a ton of great articles that I missed, but those were some that stood out to me this week. Baby girl is waking up from her nap so I have to run!

Have you read any great posts/articles that we should all check out?

Workout Wednesday TRX Style

Wednesday, December 17, 2014

Happy Workout Wednesday,

Before we get to our normal Workout Wednesday programming, I have to share this amazing video that I came across on Annette's blog, Enjoy Your Healthy Life, yesterday. It is a beautiful music video about the largest live nativity scene ever put together. It set a new Guinness World Record. The music is phenomenal and it is sure to remind you what this season is really all about!

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming for Workout Wednesday. Yesterday morning, little bit woke up extra early at 4:30 AM. After I fed her, I was pretty awake (and would have only been able to go back to sleep for 40 minutes anyways), so I decided to get in a quick circuit workout instead. I haven't used my TRX in month's, which is a total crime, so I decided to bust it out and get to work! I only had 25 minutes before I had to get ready for work, so I had to make it count!

I think I completed 6.5 rounds in 25 minutes. My arms were shaking and my hamstrings are already nice and sore today! After my workout, I quickly showered, packed my bag for the day, and headed off to the studio to teach my 7 AM Pilates Mat class and 9 AM Barre class. We had a great group in both classes. I am so impressed with how many people are sticking with their workouts even through the craziness of the holiday season. Your body will definitely thank you come January! :)

I hope you all have a great rest of your Workout Wednesday! Don't forget to check out the Workout Wednesday linkup for other great sweat inspired posts.

Annabelle Katherine 5 Month Update

Tuesday, December 16, 2014

Howdy,

It's that time again already. Time for another monthly update on sweet Annabelle! Baby girl turned 5 months old on December 9th. How is it possible that she will be half a year old next month? I say this every month, but I really can't believe it!

She is growing into such a fun and sociable little girl full of giggles and smiles. I swear the funniest things make her laugh! Once you find something that cracks her up, she wants you to do it over and over and over again and will reward you with the biggest gummy grin and belly laughs around.

She is extremely animated, and you can usually tell exactly how she is feeling by her facial expressions and the noises she is making (aka grunting or giggling). This month, you could really tell she is starting to recognize those that around her the most and gets excited when they walk in a room. She also just started to notice champ, our dog, and loves to watch him from her play mat or bumbo.

She is still sleeping pretty well most nights (only wakes up once), and is even getting better at napping. On a normal day, she naps for about 45 minutes in the morning, 2 hours in the afternoon, and 45 minutes in the evening. Now that I just typed that, she isn't going to nap at all today. :) Baby girl is still exclusively breast feeding for now. We are going to wait until she turns 6 months before starting solids. Her chubby cheeks and cute chunky thighs indicate she is getting plenty of nutrients just from mom's milk.

One of her new favorite things is riding in the stroller like a big girl! She can hold herself up well, but I still feel like the stroller swallows her a bit so I put two blankets on either side of her for support. She loves being able to see out and look around the neighborhood. Luckily, it is still plenty warm here in Texas so we can take afternoon strolls quite often.

Annabelle is still not a big fan of tummy time. I try to entertain her as best I can, but she usually gets tired of it pretty quickly. She is oh so close to rolling over, but usually gets stuck on her side. I think she actually likes laying on her side because it is easier for her to see champ. Normally, once she gets there, she is pretty content to just stay on her side.

Belle also experienced her first basketball game this month. She seemed to be very entertained by everything that was going on around her. Daddy was very proud that she seemed to like basketball just as much as football. The game we went to was at 7 PM, so I was a little afraid of how she would hold up past bed time, but she did beautifully. Minimal fussing towards the very end of the game and went to bed and slept like a champ!

She has almost mastered sitting up by herself as well. She much prefers this over tummy time, so we spend a lot of time sitting on the floor with all of her toys around her. She can usually hold herself up pretty well for awhile and then she slowly starts to lean forward. We started out using her pillow for support, but now she can pretty well manage on her own. The "mute button" pacifier is still her favorite (which is why you see it in almost every picture). :)

Over Thanksgiving, Belle got to practice her modeling skills when we took our Christmas card pictures. She did great throughout the entire shoot, and I couldn't be happier with how they turned out. A big thank you to Uncle Greg for taking the pictures and Aunt Meredith, Grandma George, and Grandpa George for jumping around and getting Annabelle to smile!

Last but not least, Annabelle went to visit Santa this month. She didn't seemed phased by him at all, and sat nicely on his lap while we snapped pictures. She was much more interested in what was going on behind the camera than smiling for dad. Oh well, she's precious just the same.

My sweet baby girl is another month older, and I fall more in love with her every day. She truly is the light of my world. I feel so blessed to get to watch her grow up and kiss those sweet cheeks each day.

How old were your kiddos when they rolled over for the first time?

Happy Healthy Holidays Challenge - Week 4 Workouts

Monday, December 15, 2014

Happy Monday!

I hope you all had a fabulous weekend! Ours was pretty laid back with a little Christmas shopping, present wrapping, Belle's first basketball game, and lots of family time! Can you believe we are already in week 4 of our Happy Healthy Holidays Challenge? How are things going so far for you? I must say, my body enjoyed focusing more on strength work than running last week. My hips very much appreciated the break and it felt good to push around heavy weights again! :)

The title of our first workout, "No Equipment, No Nonsense Plyo Workout," says it all. This workout is a no nonsense get down to business workout with lots of plyometrics built in to spike your heart rate! If you're not quite ready for all the jumping, step back into your burpees instead of jumping, exchange the jump lunges for alternating reverse lunges, and hold a plank instead of doing mountain climbers.
For our next workout, it's time to grab a barbell and get ready to work. The combination of jumping rope and resistance exercises that target large muscle groups, will keep your heart rate elevated while working your entire body in 30 minutes or less.
Next up, is a party for your legs. This "Drop It Like A Squat," workout consists of lots of love for your legs in the form of three different types of squats. All you need for this workout is a medicine ball (I used a 12lb ball) and a piece of resistance tubing. I hope you enjoy!

Remember, your goal is to fit in three workouts this week. You can do one of these workouts 3 times, do each one once, make up your own workout, or attend you favorite group fitness class. We are shooting for three intentional strength focused workout each week and 10,000 steps every day!

What is your workout schedule for the week look like?
My workout schedule for the week:
Monday: Drop It Like A Squat workout + Barre class
Tuesday: Pilates Mat class + Barre class
Wednesday: Barre class + Pilates Mat class
Thursday: 12X4 Circuit + Pilates Mat + Barre
Friday: Barre class x's 2
Saturday: No Equipment, No Nonsense Workout
Sunday: Rest

Friday Favorites - Healthy Peanut Butter Buckeye Balls

Friday, December 12, 2014

Happy Friday!

TGIF! Happy Friday everyone. It's time for another installment of Friday Favorites.

Peanut Butter Buckeye Balls

First up, you have to try these Peanut Butter Chocolate Balls of deliciousness! They are similar to a Buckeye peanut butter ball, minus all of the butter and extra sugar. The filling consists of crunchy peanut butter, honey, and coconut flour. The chocolate coating is basic dark chocolate chips and coconut oil. They are seriously that easy! Check out the original recipe by The Detoxinista here.

I made these little beauties for our all girls Christmas party on Wednesday night, and it was hard for me to resist eating them all before the party. I will definitely be making these again very soon!

Four Simple Rules

With all of the millions of fad diets and fancy workouts out there, this is a nice reminder that it's ok to keep fitness simple!

Think Before You Drink

The season of holiday parties is upon us, and with that comes numerous opportunities to consume empty calories through alcohol. Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE a good glass of red wine as much as the next girl, but be sure to think before you down one too many. Your waistline may pay for it the next day as much as your pounding head will. Next time you reach for your favorite adult beverage keep these stats in mind.

Christmas Presents

Our first Christmas presents went under the tree this week. I am still waiting on quite a few to arrive via the UPS man, but I am almost completely done shopping! Thank goodness for online shopping. Going to the mall/a million stores with a baby is down right impossible.

Christmas Music

Country Christmas Music playing in the house always makes it feel like the holidays. Belle and I usually have a Christmas music jam session while we are cooking dinner. Currently, this is our favorite playlist!

My Favorite Workout Buddy

And last but not least, my favorite little walking buddy. We just started putting her in the stroller like a big girl, instead of in her infant carrier, and she loves it. She just lounges in her stroller likes a rock star and carries on a running conversation with Sophie while we walk around the neighborhood.

I may have gone a little over board on the blanket situation, but she was definitely comfortable!

I'm off to finish up a few things around the house before heading back to the studio. I hope you all have s great Friday!

What was your favorite food, workout, or memory from this week?
