The Power of Antioxidants

According to a study in The Journal of Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism, people who took multivitamins with antioxidants for three weeks were able to pedal at the same pace with less effort than those who took a placebo. Antioxidants protect muscle proteins from free-radical damage that can lead to fatigue. Antioxidants are substances or nutrients in our foods and supplements which can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body. When our cells use oxygen, they produce free radicals which can cause damage. Antioxidants act as "free radical fighters" and hence prevent and repair damage done by these free radicals.  (HealthCastle.com)

The Most Commonly Known Antioxidants:
  • Vitamin A and Cerotenoids- carrots, squash, broccoli, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and kale
  • Vitamin C- citrus fruits, green peppers, strawberries, and green leafy veggies
  • Vitamin E- nuts & seeds, whole grains, and green leafy veggies
  • Selenium- fish, shellfish, red meat, eggs, and chicken
Health Benefits of Antioxidants:
  • Fight free radicals
  • Support kidney function
  • Improve nervous system function
  • Enhance the immune system
  • Help fight off cancer cells
  • Help maintain healthy vision
  • Reduce obesity
  • Improve quality of sleep
  • Support respiratory system
  • Slow the signs of ageing
I like to think of antioxidants as little warriors that storm around in my body fighting off the flu, cancer, and wrinkles! Really, what more could a girl ask for?

Food for thought:
Do you currently take antioxidant supplements?
How was your weekend?
